After over 14 hours of presentations and deliberation, the State of Georgia Board of Education ended with the decision to make a recommendation to Gov. Nathan Deal to “suspend all eligible members of the DeKalb County Board of Education with pay.”
At stake are the futures of 99,000 students in Georgia’s third largest school district.
Whats Next?
The State Board of Education’s recommendation goes to Governor Nathan Deal who will decide whether to remove the current board members and appoint new ones. On Thursday of next week, Fulton County Superior Court will conduct a hearing where the Dekalb school district will ask that a restraining order be issued to prevent the DeKalb Boards removal.
The current DeKalb County Board members were elected by the citizens to be in their positions. If they are removed, the new members will be appointed – not elected. This is a point that weighed on the minds of the State Board and nearly every member expressed their respect for the ballot box, however, they all stated that this is an urgent situation and immediate action is required to ensure the education of our children is the first and foremost concern.
Department of Education general counsel, Jennifer Hackemeyer, asked that the three newest board members that took office this year, be spared the suspension.

The way these people were treated did not make me feel very good. Of course they have WAY screwed up but simply removing them from their jobs is enough IMO.
Should they have rolled out the red carpet for their exit? Look. These people abused their positions – whether they did so maliciously or by sheer ignorance – the damage has been done! Sorry – not buying the compassion when kids are concerned.
